The Happening Opens With $30 Million!The Happening Opens With $30 Million!The Happening, met harshly by critics and many moviegoers thus far, still managed to gross over $30 million, accordingly to early weekend estimates. Final numbers will be in Monday evening, though revisions are almost always within $1-2 million.This is a surprising figure for the film, which to this point has received the worst reviews of Shyamalan's career. Still, Night's fans turned out in full force to see the disaster unfold on screen. If the number holds, it would edge Unbreakable as the third-highest opening in the director's career. The Happening finished third this weekend behind The Incredible Hulk, and Kung Fu Panda. However, The Happening played in in almost 1,200 fewer theaters than Kung Fu Panda, and therefore actually had a higher per-theater average. This opening number may stop The Happening from being the financial bomb some had predicted, though it still figures to drop off very quickly in the weeks to come.
