Lady in the Water on DVD Today
Posted on 12-19-2006
Well, fellow Night fans, one of the upsides of Lady in the Water grossing only $42.2 million at the domestic box office is that we're treated to a (somewhat) early DVD release. Yes, that's right, the fairy tale is available for purchase less than 5 months after its initial release. Special features include deleted scenes, a featurette titled "Lady in the Water: A Bedtime Story," a 6-part documentary, audition footage, and a gag reel. Alas, continuing a disappointing tradition, M. Night Shyamalan neglects to provide us with a director's commentary of the film. I'd hoped that, in another positive side-efect of the film's ...MORE

M. Night on the Cover of "Creative Screenwriting"
Posted on 8-5-2006
So, guess who's on the cover of the latest issue of Creative Screenwriting? I'll give you a hint: his name rhymes with "N. Right Bamalawn." No, not Frank Darabont... Yes, that's right; our man Night is gracing their cover with the headline (in steadily shrinking font sizes, so that the "M" is prominent) "M. Night Shyamalan wants to tell you a bedtime story." The article inside is written by David Michael Wharton and is titled "Irrational Resonance: Lady in the Water's M. Night Shyamalan on Dark Songs, Bedtime Stories, and Passing the Take-Home Test." Classic Shyamalan: even when his films are categorized as ...MORE

"Lady in the Water" Opens With $18 Million
Posted on 7-23-2006
Weekend actuals are in, and Lady in the Water grossed just over $18 million over the July 21st - July 23rd weekend, earning it just third place nationwide in its debut. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest took first place for the third consecutive weekend with $35.2 million, and fellow newcomber Monster House took in $22.2 million for second place over the frame. A poor critical reaction certainly didn't help, and the road ahead looks rough for Lady, which might struggle to reach so much as $50 million in domestic gross. ...MORE

REVIEW: "Lady" Struggles to Focus Its Creativity
Posted on 7-23-2006
After a slight delay, M. Night Shyamalan Online's official review of Lady in the Water is now online. It is, as you might have expected, somewhat mixed, though it's not nearly as critical as as most of the film's reviews. Here's a quote:
"...the film's silliness is tolerable, and even charming, when the characters involved are aware of it. Unfortunately, as the film goes on it increasingly glosses over their skepticism and self-consciousness about what they're doing, turning into merely a story, rather than a story about people who wonder whether or not they're in a story; a far more compelling

"Lady" Grosses Just $6.9 Million First Day
Posted on 7-22-2006
Initial estimates are in, and Lady in the Water collected roughly $6.9 million in its first day of release. It appears, then, that virtually every box office expert overshot by almost $10 million, as the film appears headed to a first weekend gross between $20 and $25 million. Unfortunately, reaching even $20 million might be a challenge, as many have anticipated that Lady in the Water would be especially "front-loaded," meaning that a large portion of its audience would see it on opening day. This was the case with Night's last film, The Village, which took in $20.4 million of its ...MORE

"Lady" Box Office Predictions
Posted on 7-21-2006
While many of you, my fellow Night fans, probably couldn't care much less about things like domestic gross, those studio places are more likely to keep giving Manoj money to bring his visions to the screen if his films perform well at the box office. To that end, here's a quick roundup of what the Internet's finest think Lady in the Water will tally this weekend from the roughly 3,200 theaters (specific counts vary) it'll be inhabiting: ...MORE

As we reported on the 10th, the Sci-Fi Channel will be airing a short clip of Lady in the Water during its presentation of Dragonfly tonight at 9:00 PM. The poorly-received 2002 film stars none other than Kevin Costner, who was allegedly considered for Paul Giamatti's role as Cleveland Heep in Night's latest effort. Fans of Night (IE: us) can check their local schedule to verify the time its showing in your area. ...MORE

Summary of Bryce Dallas Howard on Letterman
Posted on 7-19-2006
As we mentioned yesterday, Bryce Dallas Howard was on the Late Show with David Letterman last night to help promote Lady in the Water. The show's official site broke down the segment like this:
"BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD: She's the daughter of Opie, Ron Howard. (I wonder if he hates that?) Happy news from Bryce; she was married a month ago in June. It was a big wedding up at her parent's place in Connecticut. Her mom was excited about the timing, since she had been planning a big family reunion for June. The wedding took place; and the family

Media Appearances for July 19th
Posted on 7-19-2006
More media appearances for the cast and crew of Lady in the Water. M. Night himself was (apparently) a guest on The Daily Show last night. They'll be re-airing this show at 8:00 PM today on Comedy Central. We didn't see the appearance (d'oh), so this is pure hearsay. Worth checking out, though. Also, Bryce Dallas Howard will be on Late Night With Conan O'Brien tonight at 12:30 AM. In both instances, we'll try to rustle up some sort of summary or multimedia content of either, if at all possible. ...MORE

The good news: the irrepressible ComingSoon.net has an early review of Lady in the Water up. The better news: they've given it a rating of 8 out of 10. The bad news: it's got those spoiler thingies in it. Yours truly had The Village spoiled for him, loyal reader, so believe it or not, I'm not going to read the review I'm reporting on, but the option is before you if you should choose to. Posted on 7-10-2006
In what's probably old news to many of you, the Sci-Fi Channel is planning to air a a short clip of Lady in the Water on Thursday, July 20th during a 9:00 PM EST airing of Dragonfly. I'll leave it to you, loyal reader, to decide whether or not said clip is worth enduring Kevin Costner for, though I'll point out that this is set to take place the night before the film's release. And, if there are any midnight showings of Lady in the Water due, it might even take place just a few hours before the film itself ...MORE

Early Review of "Lady in the Water"
    Posted on 7-2-2006
An advance review of Shyamalan's upcoming film, Lady in the Water (release date: July 21st), has popped up on JoBlo's Movie Emporium. Here's a quote:
"...a movie as much about reconnecting with our childhood as it is about narfs, scrunts (villainous wolf creatures that arrive to capture the narf) and other fantastical creatures. It’s M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie and one of his best."
Sounds promising, to say the least. Click here to read the entire review, and check back for updates on other advance reviews as they become available online. ...MORE

    Shyamalan Elaborates on Disney Split
    Posted on 6-27-2006
The Los Angeles Times has posted a surprising article by Claudia Eller titled "Shyamalan Book Tells of Breakup With Disney." The article details the creative differences that led to Shyamalan's split from Disney. Here's a quote:
"At a disastrous dinner in Philadelphia last year, Jacobson delivered a frank critique of the "Lady in the Water" script. When she told him that she and her boss, studio Chairman Dick Cook, didn't "get" the idea, Shyamalan was heartbroken. Things got only worse when she lambasted his inclusion of a mauling of a film critic in the story line and told Shyamalan his

AICN Interviews Night on Lady in the Water
    Posted on 6-27-2006
Professional fanboy Harry Knowles had a rather lengthy, rambling phone conversation with -- guess who? -- M. Night Shayamalan earlier this month, and he's been good enough to provide the general public with a rough transcript. Huzzah. Topics inclue, of course, Lady in the Water, as well as the possibility of a sequel to Unbreakable, and Night's break from Disney. ...MORE
